REPAIRS

We can provide full mechanical services for your Corvair from a minor tune-up though a complete chassis and powertrain rebuild. Click on engine rebuilding if that's what you need to know.

We are not afraid to take on a "basket case," and we have a great deal of experience resurrecting cars that have been in prolonged storage.

For other makes, the level of repairs we'll do varies by make, so contact us for specific details.

What we won't do

We are not a body or trim shop, so if you are looking for a paint job, bodywork, or an interior rehab, you've got the wrong place.

We also choose to not work on Ultra Vans, 8/10 Cords, dune buggies, kit cars, sand rails, motorcycles, Volksvairs, airboats, or other unusual transplants of the Corvair engine. We might be able to help on some component repairs for those applications, but we seldom care to take on the whole vehicle.

Besides "regular" repairs, we do our own 4 wheel alignments in house, as well as our own carburetor and turbocharger repair.

Your parts or ours

We generally don't object to using parts that you provide yourself, unless we feel the item is simply unsuitable for the job. When using "your" parts, however, any failure of the part remains "your" problem and would be exempt from any warranty that might otherwise be provided at the Vair Shop.

Modifications

Our emphasis here at the Vair Shop is on the correct stock appearance and operation of your Corvair car or truck. While we do entertain some modifications that improve reliability (such as better materials), safety (such as a dual master brake cylinder conversion to earlier single master cars), or comfort (air conditioning, cruise control, sound systems), we choose to not do major performance modifications, such as alternative fuel systems, disc brake conversions, or radical engine changes.

Scheduling

Because we work primarily on "hobby" cars, our repair schedule is typically booked quite some time in advance. All repairs are done by appointment. At peak times, there may be a backlog of 6 months or more, so don’t wait until the last week before a big meet to "see if we can squeeze you in," because we probably can’t. Please plan ahead.

Component repairs

The Vair Shop can rebuild your carburetor, turbocharger, differential, or other component part on a time available basis. During the busiest summer months, we may decline taking on some "bench work" in order to fully accommodate the complete cars already scheduled in for service. Call or e-mail for current workload/time estimates.

Towing

We offer both open flatbed or fully enclosed trailer towing of your vehicle to the Vair Shop. Charges vary depending on which trailer is required and whether the vehicle can be driven or must be winched on. Additional charges apply for vehicles that do not roll, vehicles that must be "unburied" or extracted from garages, barns, etc., or for items not contained within the vehicle. Call or e-mail us for a towing quote.

For long distance towing (250+ miles), contact us for numbers of long distance carriers we have successfully used in the past.

Alignments

Frustrated by the lack of competent alignment services, we bought the equipment to do the job ourselves. We take the time to get it right, not just "in the ballpark." You won't believe how nice a car drives when it's properly aligned front and rear!

Machine shop services

We have developed a fine relationship with two top-notch machine shops to handle cylinder head rebuilding, cylinder boring, crankshaft reconditioning, and other machining operations. As with our other sublet suppliers, these guys are the best, and we're happy to offer their services to you.

Other component services

We have developed good working relations with several shops that specialize in the following items: manual transmissions, speedometers, fuel senders, gauges, starters, generators, alternators, clutch parts, radiators, and heater cores. We looked long and hard to find guys we trust to do the kind of job we wanted. Send us your part to be rebuilt (we have some cores available), and we'll handle it though our network of sublet suppliers.
